Properly speaking K-strophanthoside contains a-glucose 19%, b-glucose 19%, cymarose 15%, strophanthidin 47%. Properties: White or yellowish powder contg as much as 10% water, which it does not lose entirely without decompn. Very poisonous! Stable in air, but affected by light. Soluble in water and in dil alcohol; less sol in abs alcohol. Nearly insol in chloroform, ether, benzene. Aq solns are neutral to litmus. When bioassayed, strophanthin shall possess a potency per mg equivalent to 0.5 mg of U.S.P. Ouabain Reference Standard. A deviation of 20% is permitted. MLD in cats, rats (mg/kg): 0.11, 9.4 i.v. (Mehnert).
