In this regard, it was discovered that the synthesis protocols used for laboratory synthesis of drug-loaded silicasomes (e.g., 500 mg/batch) do not scale to large scale silicasome production, because the resulting products were too heterogeneous for use as pharmaceuticals. Accordingly, new methods are provided herein that effectively afford the large-scale production of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNPs) and lipid bilayer coated MSNPs (silicasomes).

Effects of select Na- and Ca-channel blockers on collagen synthesis and deposition were evaluated in cultured human dermal fibroblasts and aortic smooth muscle cells by immunoassay. Ca and Na-channel blockers inhibited the synthesis of collagen type I and collagen type IV, the basic molecules of vascular wall stability. The inhibitory effects of the calcium and sodium channel blockers on collagen synthesis was reversed by introducing ascorbic acid and/or ascorbyl palmitate. It can be concluded that calcium and sodium channel blockers have a direct inhibitory effect on collagen synthesis, favoring the instability of the vascular wall and the progression of cardiovascular disease, an effect that is mitigated by treatment with, ascorbyl palmitate, ascorbic acid and or derivatives thereof.

The protein is coenzyme PQQ synthesis protein B. The invention also features polynucleotides comprising the full-length polynucleotide sequences of the novel genes and fragments thereof, the novel polypeptides encoded by the polynucleotides and fragments thereof, as well as their functional equivalents. The present invention also relates to the use of said polynucleotides and polypeptides as biotechnological tools in the production of Vitamin C from microorganisms, whereby a modification of said polynucleotides and/or encoded polypeptides has a direct or indirect impact on yield, production, and/or efficiency of production of the fermentation product in said microorganism. Also included are methods/processes of using the polynucleotides and modified polynucleotide sequences to transform host microorganisms. The invention also relates to genetically engineered microorganisms and their use for the direct production of Vitamin C.

A particular method of making a tellurium nanomaterial includes combining citrus fruit extract with a tellurium salt to form a mixture of citrus fruit extract and dissolved tellurium salt; and heating the mixture of citrus fruit extract and dissolved tellurium salt, thereby making the tellurium nanomaterial. The resulting nanoparticles exhibit enhanced and desirable biomedical properties toward treatment of both infectious diseases and cancer.
