The method comprises providing an enzyme capable of converting psi-ionone to cis-α-irone; and contacting the enzyme and psi-ionone under suitable conditions to produce cis-α-irone. The enzyme may be a methyltransferase from Streptomyces albireticuli (SaMT), a promiscuous bifunctional methyltransferase/cyclase (pMT1) enzyme from Streptomyces, or a modified pMT1 enzyme with at least one substitution. The enzymes allow the in-vivo and in-vitro production of cis-α-irone including the use of glucose as feedstock for the biotransformation into cis-α-irone.

The compositions comprise a mixture of a compound that promotes synthesis of nerve growth factor, an aldose reductase inhibitor and an antioxidant, optionally formulated in a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. This combination of active agents provides significant, effective relief of the symptoms of diabetic neuropathy, as well as at least partial recovery of lost neurological function in some cases. In addition, the compositions of the present invention, when used in effective amounts to treat diabetic neuropathy, do not exhibit the severe side effects of many prior art compositions proposed for treatment of this ailment. n In a second aspect, a method for the administration of a composition in accordance with the present invention for the treatment of diabetic neuropathy is disclosed. In the method, an effective amount of the composition of the invention is administered on a regular basis over a period of time sufficient to provide the beneficial effects of relief from the symptoms of diabetic neuropathy, as well as at least some recovery of the damaged nerve tissues.

Synthesis of dihydronepetalactone may be achieved by hydrogenation of nepetalactone, the major constituent of catmint essential oils. This compound, which also has fragrance properties, may be used commercially for its insect repellent properties.

The CSPVP complexes can be used in asymmetric oxidation of diols, enantioselective oxidation of alkenes, and carbon-carbon bond forming reactions, for example. The CSPVP can also be complexed with biomolecules such as proteins, DNA, and RNA, and used as nanocarriers for siRNA or dsRNA delivery.

Synthesis of the enzyme in the host cell results in conversion of a substrate for the enzyme into a biosynthetic pathway intermediate, which intermediate is produced in an amount effective to inhibit growth of the genetically modified host cell. The present invention further provides compositions and kits comprising a subject genetically modified host cell. Subject host cells are useful for identifying a gene product having activity in a biosynthetic pathway. The present invention further provides methods of identifying a gene product having activity in a biosynthetic pathway.
