The process combines the advantages of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and reversible addition fragmentation transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Synthesis of chain transfer agents useful in the disclosed processes is also disclosed. Other improvements on ATRP RAFT processes are also described.

An embodiment of the present invention relates a process of polymerizing first and second monomers in the presence of a complex comprising at least one of the monomers. The presence of the complex modifies the relative reactivity, or cross propagation rate constants, of the monomers in copolymerization reactions. Embodiments of the present invention allow the synthesis of polymers with novel stereochemistry and monomer sequence distribution, for example, but not limited to, copolymers with at least one segment of alternating monomers, a controlled molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution, or a segment of high concentration of the first monomer.
专利号:WO-2014049363-A1 优先权日:2012-09-27 标题 :Block copolymer synthesis 发明人:ARMES STEVEN P; FIELDING LEE; DERRY MATTHEW 权利人:UNIV SHEFFIELD 摘要:The present invention relates to a method of preparing colloidally stable polymeric particles (in situ within a non-polar solvent-based medium) comprising a block copolymer of formula B wherein: P 1 represents a polymeric component that is soluble in the non-polar solvent-based medium; and P 2 represents a polymeric component that is substantially insoluble in the non-polar solvent- based medium and is derived from a monomer M 2 (singular) that is soluble in the non-polar solvent-based medium. The block copolymer of formula B is formed by a reversible addition- fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerisation of the non-polar solvent-soluble M 2 monomers (plural) in the presence of a non-polar solvent-soluble macromolecular chain transfer agent (macro-CTA) of the formula P 1 -X, where X is a suitable RAFT chain transfer agent. The resulting diblock copolymer particles are formed in situ during the course of the RAFTdispersion polymerisation. As such, particles of varying size, morphology and surface charge can be duly prepared with very high monomer conversions for M 2 by judiciously varying the reaction conditions.
