Adrenochrome is an oxidation product of epinephrine (adrenaline), and although it has been studied for decades, its bioactivity remains poorly characterized and controversial. Early research suggested that adrenochrome might have mild vasoconstrictive and pro-coagulant effects, potentially due to its ability to promote platelet aggregation. Some in vitro studies have shown that adrenochrome can inhibit monoamine oxidase (MAO) and may exhibit weak neurotoxic or oxidative stress-inducing properties, though the effects are not potent or consistent. Reported activity includes the modulation of glutathione levels and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in certain cell lines at micromolar concentrations (e.g., 10–100 µM), but these effects are generally modest. There is no robust evidence of significant receptor-binding activity or pharmacological relevance in vivo.
