Artesunate, a semisynthetic derivative of artemisinin, has demonstrated broad preclinical bioactivity against malaria and cancer. In murine Plasmodium berghei models, artesunate reduced parasitemia by >99% at 50 mg/kg and prolonged survival significantly compared with controls. In cancer models, artesunate inhibited proliferation of human leukemia and hepatocellular carcinoma cells with IC₅₀ values of 1–5 μM and suppressed tumor growth in xenografts by up to 60%. It also showed anti-inflammatory effects, reducing TNF-α and IL-6 levels in LPS-stimulated mice. These results highlight its potent antiparasitic, anticancer, and immunomodulatory properties, supporting further translational development.
